Shattering Job Myths
Sometimes the job hunt can really make you go crazy, especially if you have a killer resume and all the experience that is required. Here are 5 myths about the job hunt. Don’t allow these myths to stump your search and prevent you from walking in the door to your new career.
YOU DIDN’T GET A RESPONSE TO YOUR APPLICATION OR EMAIL…
So you think they aren’t interested. You have a professional cover letter and a resume the president would find impressive, but you have not heard a peep. I know this can send you in to the great depression but this doesn’t mean they aren’t interested.
Usually recruiters and managers are so busy and overworked that they simply haven’t gotten the chance to let you know that you have landed your dream job. Some are conducting background checks, reference checks, some are on vacation, and some are just busy working. There truly is no way to know and so… relax and be polite but tenacious in your follow up efforts. You have to be patient and understand that while some companies have the time to let you know right away, for some companies you just have to wait.
MY EXPERIENCE WILL GET ME IN THE DOOR…
Experience is a start, however, it isn’t everything. More interviewers and recruiters are looking for the right fit: someone who matches his or her team. All of the experience in the world wont give you the personality someone is looking for.
I KNOW MY CAREER PATH…
And I am sticking to it! You are hesitant regarding another career path but that really might be just what you need to get a new job. You should consider continuing education credits or a training class to get you up to speed and spend a little time on what you need to know for the position. Otherwise, the change up could land you a new role, more cash, and great fun!
You will find it beneficial to know that many companies jump at a candidate who is versatile and willing to try a different perspective.
I’VE BEEN AT THIS FOR MONTHS…
No one is going to hire me. I know how easy it is to become hopeless, especially when bills are piling up. You have to try something different. Networking is always a plus because somebody that knows somebody fills most jobs. Make friends and keep abreast of what is going in their company. Recruiters will always hire a personal referral before anyone else. Reach out to your friends and old colleagues on social media. Let them introduce you to someone at their company.
I APPLIED SO THEY WILL MATCH ME TO EVERYTHING AVAILABLE…
Nope. This is a terrible assumption. Unless it is stated, do not sit and wait on this to occur.
Most companies do not have software that is sophisticated enough to track those who have applied or been interviewed and match them to another position that is now available. I would suggest checking back regularly to see if new positions have opened up. You should also contact the recruiter regularly during your search to stay on top of new openings.
